The one where he hangs with his mom!

So being new it town, I suppose that it is a given that I would spend as much time as I could doing the "urban exploring" thing as possible. Fortunately, I have had some decent companions lately... Well the first companion was a disaster... the not quite ex came to visit, well she came for a wedding and stayed with me. So I think the only thing that we explored was Front Page News on Crescent, for breakfast, at five in the afternoon on Sunday... after being up all night/morning fighting... because she did Coke. Like I said, disaster.

The next few companions were worthy... the last being my Mom. Now tripping around the ATL can always be a bit different when you have a 60-year old lady in tow, yet we managed to uncover a few mutually exciting gems.

The Highlight Reel, please:

* Screen on the Green - Piedmont Park... great weather, great crowd and the kick-off for Pridefest so the atmosphere was going to be colorful to say the least. The movie was Mommie Dearest, so applause came when a drag queen dressed up as Joan Crawford in the "hanger" scene make his... errr... her... um... his way through the crowd carrying a $300 dress on a wire hanger. The largest applause of the evening wasn't for the movie however... it was for me, from my mom when I finally found the car after the movie. On the way to the movie, I got a text message from the above mentioned ex. I dropped my mom off at the corner by the park so she wouldn't have to walk 20 blocks and proceeded down some Atlanta midtown street in search of a parking spot... and of course I called the ex back... for gosh sake's she is still #3 on my speed dial... is that needy? yes! hopeful? yes! emotionally-challenged? definately! Of course, I was so overly consumed with the chance to talk her that I completely forgot where I parked, how I parked, what I drove and simply where I was!! Quite the adventure, tripping around Midtown at midnight with my mom trying to find the car... If you have seen the Seinfeld episode, "the Parking Lot"... that is a pretty good assessment. None the less, odds, God's will and sheer luck got me to the corner of 5th & Durant before my mom passed out.

* Sundial Cafe - Top of the Westin... anytime I can go to the top of tall buildings and look around... I am going to be into it... The Sundial Cafe or Lounge or Bar or whatever surely has a view of all things Atlanta... including the smog, haze, smoot, etc. Now I know why I moved to this city, humidty AND smog!! Well, since our sightlines were limited, i spent most of the time learning every piece of worthless trivia about Atlanta around the inside of the carousel bar (remember the state fish of Georgia?)

* AMC Backlot Cinema - Buckhead... listen, apparently my mother and I are the last two people in the known universe to hear about these things... everyone I told this to already knew... but there are movie theaters out there with tables, full menus (well...) and beer & wine. So here I was... with a grin on my face like a kid who is opening his birthday present... watching the story of Anakin Skywalker... eating a pizza with black olives & mushrooms... sipping a pint of Terrapin Pale Ale... I am telling you, this was good stuff (well...) for a rainy Sunday afternoon. Okay, fine, it doesn't take a lot to amuse me...
